Araluen - Where Flowers & Heritage Bloom

Araluen Botanical Park is a very special place to PRHRIA members. Perhaps for you it is the combination of beautiful gardens, old roses, towering trees and the wonderful feeling that, for a little while, you have stepped away from the busy world. It is also all those things to us, but it is especially notable as our history as a group is very much tied up with this historic garden. (read more HERE).

Every year, Araluen bursts into colour as an extraordinary 250,000 tulips and 50,000 spring bulbs come into bloom, transforming the valley into a spectacular floral wonderland.

But before the flowers appear, there is plenty of work to be done! Around 300,000 tulip bulbs need to be planted, and each year Araluen welcomes volunteers to join in. It is one of those jobs that sounds rather daunting until you are actually there, sharing the work, chatting, laughing and knowing that the little bulbs going into the ground will eventually become part of one of Western Australia's most beautiful spring displays. There is something rather lovely about that. You do the work now, and months later you get to come back and enjoy the flowers.

Preserving a little piece of the past

Araluen's beauty isn't only about what is flowering today. The park also has a wonderful commitment to preserving our horticultural heritage.

Within the gardens is the Araluen Heritage Rose Garden, a special place for members of PRHRIA.

Heritage roses have stories. Some have been grown for generations, and many have connections to gardens and gardeners long gone. By caring for these old varieties, we aren't simply looking after pretty flowers - we are helping to preserve a small but precious piece of our gardening history.

Our dedicated members lovingly tend the Heritage Rose Garden, and it is always a delight to see the roses flourishing at Araluen.

There is something particularly fitting about old roses growing in such a historic and beautiful garden. They belong there.
