The Second Sunday in May!

  • May 4
  • 1 min read

Mother’s Day was first celebrated in 1908 and established by Anna Jarvis who wanted to honor her own mother. It became a US national holiday six years later. Today, Mother’s Day is celebrated in 168 countries around the world. This day recognises Mothers and other ‘Mother Figures’ in our lives. Grandmothers, stepmothers, mother-in-law’s, adoptive mothers, foster mothers, aunties, teachers, older sisters, ‘would-be’ mothers, family friends or even ‘chosen’ family members! You do not have to give birth to a person to become a wonderful ‘Mother Figure’ in someone else’s life! This day is an inclusive celebration of maternal love.

This cherished tradition honours the incredible role Mums have in our lives. It’s a day filled with love, gratitude, and family gatherings.

Australians typically celebrate by showering their Mums with gifts, cards, and flowers to express their love and appreciation. Maybe breakfast in bed, homemade gifts from children or family gatherings.

So, what do us ‘older mums’ really want?

1. We want quality time with our kids! We don’t really care what we do. Take a day trip, watch a movie or simply relax together and enjoy each other’s company.

2. We want the family to be together. Come home, cook my favourite meal and play cards afterwards. Or get in the car and take me on a picnic!

That’s all I want for ‘The Second Sunday in May!’ But then there are some Mum’s who enjoy a big bouquet of old roses or even an old rose to plant in your garden and you never forget that child who gave it to you.
